Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica alba x Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi 'Wan Kou'
My first successful pollination is Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica alba (pod parent) with Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi 'Wan Kou" (pollen parent).
Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica alba is a particularly beautiful specimen, with particularly large and lovely flower shape for this species. It is a very vigorous plant, blooming from 4-5 spikes at a time.
Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi 'Wan Kou' is notable for the intense color of its blooms.
In this cross, I am hoping for the flower shape and floriferousness of hieroglyphica with added pigmentation from cornu-cervi.
The heiroglyphica was pollinated in August 2023, and the pod matured almost 9 months until May, 2024. When the pod started to yellow, a paper envelope was placed over the pod until it split, and was then cut from the spike with a sterile tool.
The seeds from the pod were very tiny and fine, and there seemed to be more fluffy chaff than seeds. When a drop from the sterilized seed was viewed under the microscope, only a small portion of the seeds seem to be fertilized.

Undeveloped seeds- no visible embryos, much smaller. |
With low fertility and productivity in this cross, I am hoping that I get some viable plants!
